GUEST SPEAKERS AT GENERAL SYNOD
MS CLARE AMOS
Clare Amos is Director for Theological Studies in the Anglican Communion Office. Her roles there include responsibility for both theological education and inter faith concerns, and she also works alongside Stephen Lyon in the recently established project on ‘The Bible in the Life of the Church’. Clare studied theology at Cambridge University, England, and then spent 10 years in the Middle East, initially in Jerusalem and then in the Lebanon. Initially she studied at the Ecole Biblique, Jerusalem, and then worked as Course Director at St George’s College, Jerusalem. Her experience at St George’s College – which offers short courses linked to the Bible and the Holy Land, to a range of Christians, particularly Anglicans, from all round the world introduced her to the Anglican Communion in all its glorious complexity and variety. After her marriage to Alan Amos, then Anglican chaplain in Beirut, Clare lived and worked in Lebanon both at the Middle East Council of Churches and at the Near East School of Theology, Beirut, where ministers for a variety of Protestant Churches in the Middle East are trained. Clare’s years in Beirut, which included some of the worst years of the Lebanese civil war and the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982 influenced her growing interest in inter faith concerns.
On returning to England, both Alan and Clare took up positions at Westcott House theological college, Cambridge, where Clare taught biblical studies and acted as Director of Studies. Since leaving Westcott she has been involved in a variety of forms of theological education – for both clergy and lay people – in full time and part time contexts. As an Anglican laywoman herself, Clare has a passion to help ‘all God’s people to become theologians’. Clare began to work for the Anglican world mission agency USPG as their theological adviser in 2000, but over the last decade
has been invited to assume increasing responsibilities in the Anglican Communion office, although she still maintains some links with USPG.
